Fine Victory for Pirie

The 1956 Olympic 5000m silver medallist, D. A. G. Pirie, orienteering brilliantly over a physically testing course in the heavily wooded Maramarua East State Forest yesterday won the Cerebos New Zealand elite championship in 2h 3m 32s.

Pirie won by the close margin of 1m 43s over C. Battley (Pupuke), another New Zealand representative and winner of the 10,000m bronze medal in the last national track championships, in a tense exciting contest which demanded considerable concentration on each of the 13 control legs of the course.
